There is a relatively limited set of choices you can make under normal circumstances: hiring advisors to improve your capabilities, hiring troops, about two dozen diplomatic actions in peace, and a number of different peace deal options when terminating a war. Lots of depth EUIV is a simulation of global politics and war. Streaming is best - you can ask questions, and most streamers will answer. Your best bet is to find videos of people playing the game with a bit more skill than you. You can pause the game at any time and find all the data you can handle, but if you're not just extracting the important parts, the deluge won't help. Determining what's important takes experience. But simply finding all these parts of the user interface takes time playing. For instance, rebel uprising progress can be tracked easily - you won't be surprised by a sudden uprising of Najdi nationalists, and when you're in for a long-term peasant revolt, the game will tell you why it's happening, how to prevent it, and how to get out of it once it happens. In the later patches, the user interface has been improving to help reduce surprises - and the game mechanics as well. The game does give you guidance in the form of alert bubbles in the upper left of the screen, informing you of the things it thinks are most relevant, and paying attention to those can at least show you what you might want to think about. Even after you've learned the basics, you'll still find yourself wondering: if I declare a holy war, will it cost me diplomatic power to annex territory or not? And it's often hard - certainly in ironman mode - to undo decisions, so small mistakes and misclicks can end up costing you a lot. You crush them and bring them under your control - and suddenly you find revolutions popping up everywhere. You start again and this time you find a weak neighbor with no allies. You start over as a bigger country and attack a smaller neighbor - and suddenly you're in a war against several large countries at once. You have a country and three thousand infantrymen - what can you do? You decide to attack your neighbor - and they cut you down like reeds. Steep learning curve When you start out, it can be overwhelming. ![]()

![]() ![]() The single greatest thing Nidhogg does is that you absolutely cannot win. ![]() The single greatest thing Nidhogg does is that it understands how to entertain a crowd as well as its players. It's a wonderful risk-reward gambit, but better yet it happens accidentally half the time, leaving you looking mad as a hotpot full of badgers. It'll certainly leave you without a sword, and then what? Run on, or run to where one lies on the ground, burning precious time and leaving yourself vulnerable. The single greatest thing Nidhogg does is that you can throw your sword. Whatever your fate, it always, always looks exactly 48 times as dramatic as your own, six-key actions. Sometimes it looks like incredible expertise: a quick 180 flip as you're running, transforming your cocky pursuer into yellow or orange-hued prey, or a perfect hurdle over a waiting enemy and disappearing off to the next screen before he can react. Sometimes it's simply inept, running directly into an aloft blade like a sprite with a determined death wish, or cooling slicing open your foe's guts then immediately plunging into a death-pit when you turn to run on. When it doesn't work, and you collapse shamefully to the floor in the middle of a dramatic leap, it's hilarious. It's a series of strategies and panics, reacting with both instinct and animal terror when the enemy runs or lunges at you. That is, however, where the lunatic merriment lies. A single blade-on-flesh kiss means immediate death, and a few seconds of crazed sprinting for the victor. Your sword can be held at one of three heights, which you alter dependent on where the enemy's held his - or, more to the point, where you think the enemy is going to hold his. Sure, you're a bit further along, but you're still faced with a mirror image of your one-colour, sword-wielding self. Because when he respawns, it's right in your way again. Your only manner of getting there is to snatch a few metres of progress while your felled opponent waits to respawn. Several screens far left and several screens far right awaits. The single greatest thing Nidhogg does that one player's death does not result in their removal from the game, but instead a precious few seconds for the victor to peg it further to the left or the right without impediment, depending on which player he is. It's essentially a side-scrolling fighting game, but with careful combinations replaced by desperate survivalism.
